Encounters with The Syrian Encounters

Ussi Taraben

For everyone who has mastered his first steps in Levantine Arabic and is not completely unfamiliar with the Arabic script, Hala’s "The Syrian Encounters" is great stuff to learn with, especially if you use it as material for your lessons with Hala.

The three most important features for me are:

Its language: Although it is written, it is the ‚real stuff, i.e. the really spoken dialect in Syria. The texts are filled with a lot of idiomatic speech and these little expressions or sometimes filler words, which are so typical for the spoken Levantine, and which really make the difference. In addition you have an English translation so you can take advantage of the book, even if its level may be a bit your own current language level.

its content: It is as typically Syrian Levantine as is the language: in Syrian dialect you get introduced to the culture of Syria. And this does contain every aspect of day-by-day-life of common Syrians, be it their mostly religious festivities through the year, their popular film stars and TV highlights, their family life and so on;

its very personal touch: Hala is telling about her own experiences, so the content is not at all made-up or artificial, but realistic and authentic. And this doesn’t only make it very pleasant to read but also lets you to stray and inspires you to reflect your own experiences, and to discuss whatever comes to mind during the lessons. And the latter is – in my opinion – most useful, when you are learning a new spoken dialect.

From me the "Syrian Encounters“ get ten out of ten, and I am greatly looking forward to a part two!
